Frequently Asked Questions

  • A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed additional education and training and can assess patients, make diagnoses, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and develop treatment plans. They work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive care.

  • The main difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner is their educational background and the scope of practice. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, able to diagnose and treat mental illnesses through medication management, therapy, and other medical interventions. They have undergone extensive medical training, including medical school and residency.

On the other hand, a psychiatric nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in psychiatric and mental health care. They can assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders, provide therapy and counseling, and prescribe medications within their scope of practice.

While both professionals work in mental health care, psychiatrists have a broader medical background, whereas psychiatric nurse practitioners bring their nursing expertise and often take a holistic and patient-centered approach.

  • Integrative psychiatry takes a holistic approach to mental health, considering the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. It aims to minimize the use of medications when possible, opting for a balanced approach that considers the benefits and potential risks associated with medication use. It combines traditional psychiatric treatments with complementary therapies, such as nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and other mind-body practices.

Integrative psychiatry emphasizes the importance of lifestyle modifications, including sleep, stress management, and healthy habits. It recognizes the potential benefits of evidence-based complementary approaches like acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and herbal supplements into treatment plans.
